Colby and Infinity are back at FPP, Sonny and Solara will come in March

Dear all,
Spirit was not able to afford a new home in given format and we are back at FPP.
I am sorry for long brake in our activities, and I hope that we will be able to keep on going with some limitation (weather, temperature...) in mid January....
Please consider a need for new, temporary schedule, considering that we will work with only two horses...so let me know what time works for you the best...The youngest kids should have priority, but weather might be bad for them, so communication will be very important in next few months.

Saturday mornings 10, 11 and 12 AM (starting at 16th) - outdoor ring, if weather permits

Monday, Wednesday afternoons 5 and 6 PM - indoor ring, if there is no conflict with FPP activities

Friday, afternoons 2 and 3 PM - outdoor ring, if weather permits

This above are available spots, and I need your feed back to be able to format our schedule.

Looking forward to hearing from you, Dada

No lessons for now, and encouragement

Sorry to have to let you know, dear riders and volunteers, as it looks now, no lessons for now with Spirit, but our Team is doing the best to put us back on a track...

Thank you for your patience, and please, stay in touch....

Some nice words in right moment.... a great encouragement from Wendy, our para equestrian rider, friend, teacher and member of Advisory Committee...Thank you, Wendy, and hope that Spirit will help you to fulfill a dream about World Equestrian Games 2010.

"Hi Dada, and to all other Board members,
I will be unable to attend tonight's meeting as my neighborhood is still not very accessible. All the melting from today will quickly refreeze as ice and combined with my disability it is not a safe situation for me to risk a fall. Please accept my sincere apologies for this meeting and thank you to you all for providing such a wonderful program for those of us wiht disabilities. This is truly an exemplary program, unlike any other I have encountered in this country. The riders in Spirit are given the encouragement and opportunities to advance and learn true riding, compete, and feel that they are in control of something in their lives. Thank you to Dada for having the vision, and all the many volunteers who are such a vital part of this organization. I hope to represent Spirit in Kentucky this summer at the World Equestrian Games. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.

See and meet you all at the next meeting, weather permitting,
Wendy Shugol"

All is ready for horses...

Thanks to all who helped this week, Theresa, Don and Andrew were almost each time with Boris and me working hard to make it happen...also, Jeff and Karen used their cars to move a few last things from FPP. Kendra helped us with grain and Sam's friend Glen put hay in feeders...

At the same time, under supervision of Nina, new president of Spirit, Spirit's Farm property is changing it's face, and becoming a real equestrian place....

Thank you all for all you do to create a home for Spirit Program.

No plans for tomorrow, even I will be there with Boris just to do last check up, and then, sometime at Sunday afternoon, Louise and her friend Alison will bring our horses to the new home...

Next Sat, first one in December, at 11 AM,I would like to invite all volunteers, new and old to gather for an hour or two to meet and bee introduced with a new facility, so we can set up a new routine and create plans for future work.

You can contact me if you want to keep on going and continue to be the Friend of Spirit, but can not come next Sat, and I am looking forward to hear about your plans to spend some time with Spirit kids and horses.

Thank you, and stay in touch if you have any questions, please, reach me by e-mail or comment here.

Hi to all, and sorry that I am so late with this post...it was a long day (and I was hungry when I came home :)

So, rubber mats are here, and gates for facility, some fencing panels, saddle racks...

All of that is waiting for us to set it up.

Boris, my husband will be at the farm at 10 AM and I will come somewhere around 1 PM (have to teach 10-12 language )...Feel free to come anytime and help us about it...

Thank you so much for any help,

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

This and that....

Hi to all!

we are almost there...and Spirit will have a great Thanksgiving season I feel :)

Thank you Karen and Jeff for this Tuesday trip to the farm with some more things from FPP.

Just horses and big ramp...we have, mostly organized transport for horses (no riding, sorry;), but ramp is a problem...it is big and heavy...

Here are the measurements for the ramp.

Width 48 inches
Height 66 inches
Length 72 inches (box, platform part)
Length 92 inches (ramp, incline part)

If you have an idea how to deal with it, please, let me know...

I hope that we will have rubber mats, and maybe even modular fence to post in the facility for this Saturday. Also, saddle racks just arrived, and the most of activity related to it should be done this Saturday and even Friday...Please, contact me if you have plan to come and help... There is something to do for any kind of ability, as we have to clean and oil all tack, beside all above I mentioned....

Thank you and with some luck, we can have horses at new beautiful place before the end of the month!

Monday, November 16, 2009

Tuesday, what we need to do, and plans for rest of the week....

For Tuesday, I will meet with Jeff at 3 PM at the FPP barn to load some more stuff from there. I will not stay at the Farm as I have to feed and muck at FPP after that.

If anyone is interested and has ability to help to move few last items, please call me or e-mail

There is the green mounting ramp.Big and heavy :(

We need big truck for it and few people to help unload it at the Spirit Farm ( I hope that we will get help from FPP for loading on the truck)

There is our red pony cart, too, which can go in horse trailer or bigger truck, too.
Wednesday I will be at the Farm from 3.30 to 5 or 6, and Thursday, from 2.30 to 5 to sort, clean and organize Spirit assets. Whoever feels like to help about it is more than welcome to come :)
Friday I will spend morning,10-3 at the Farm ,and Saturday afternoon.

Mats and fencing might be delivered this week anytime, and then it will be a big project to set it up.

Hope that all will be done for this week end and after that we might planning to move horses at the week end after Thanksgiving.

Thank you all for all help and support in this important time for Spirit program and can not wait to continue our lessons again at the new facility.

Saturday, November 14, 2009

Thank you all great Spirit people for incredible work you did today!

Almost all Spirit assets is gone from FPP....it was faster and less painful than I ever planed.
Thanks to great Spirit Team, volunteers, friends and families....

Next step:

We wait for rubber mats delivery and I will invite all who can help about setting it so we will be one step closer to bringing horses at new home!

Thank you for being part of Spirit Family and looking forward to seeing you again soon.

No lessons...see you at new facility at 19th December!

Dear riders,
as you can see, to wet to do lessons today, but I hope that is a last cancellation from my side because of weather...

Looking forward to hear from you and to see you again

Saturday, 19th December
(to be confirmed)

At new facility, dry, warm and functional for our kids and program.

Friday, November 13, 2009

Forecast is not helpful...and important news!

It seems still unknown anything about weather at Herndon this Saturday....so, to all riders, please call me after 8.30 to find out what situation looks like. I will be in touch with Mr Jeff and will know more... :)And will post it here, too!

For volunteers, you are all invited if we do not have lessons to do one trip to new facility and help moving Spirit's assets there. I hope you will like that new chance for all of us to do safe, dry and warm lessons this winter...Thanks Don, Therese, Hedy and Julia who already visited new facility and helped about painting....!

Important info for all ....Spirit program will take a break to finish moving process move and retrain horses at new facility - and we should all meet again at Spirit's Open House Event at the end of December ( probably, Saturday 19th) After that we will continue our lessons in New Year.

Please help me to build weekly schedule for future...Options are:

Any day in a week 3-8 PM
Friday possible AM or early PM hours (good for those who are scared of commute)
Saturday AM hours....

Send me your at least two choices and I will do my the best to make all us happy :)

Wish you a great holly days season which starts at Thanksgiving and looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Action before Thanks Giving....

Moving Spirit to a new home...
Whoever is willing to help, please contact me....I will be there, at the Farm, most of the day, tomorrow and Friday, too...
Just a thought - I will put in smaller storage at FPP most of things we need for Sat lessons, so if it is ever possible to try to move bigger one using trailer or truck...any of this days, that would help a lot...
Maybe Sat after lessons is the best time , as we will have a lot of people to help load...also small mounting ramp might fit into any track...so please, let me know if there is a chance to do it this week, please?

For big mounting ramp we will rent a big truck later....and will need help to unload it at the farm...

Looking forward to hear any feed back, and can not wait to present you a new facility, too.......

I am so sorry, and forgive me please, if I created problem to you with consistent changes in plans...All good will we had to keep our PM lessons did not work well, and, so far, we will keep on going with Saturday AM schedule at FPP, and Spirit Farm later (December)

As you recognized, we are about to organize moving project...and I hope with help of great Spirit people team it will be done somehow...

This Tuesday,I will just pick up some things from barn and after feeding horses proceed to Spirit farm as I am already kind a close to it.

Wednesday, Boris and me will do painting work there, or , if he has to go to work I will do as much as I can...and anyone willing to help is more to welcome.

Friday is next day I do not teach at school so it will be a good day to move as much as possible assets from FPP.

At Saturday we will have regular lessons at 10,11,12 and after that we might make another trip with whoever is willing to the Farm ...

That is a draft program for this week and please, let me know if and how you can participate. You can call or email for details on each day.

Thank you all for any help, and looking forward to see you again, maybe Saturday....

Day by day...

This Saturday lessons was great reminder how much joy Spirit Program brings and whole Team of Spirit People did great job ...Let's hope that next Sat we will be able to repeat the same if weather permits.
Please, note that there are no lessons during a week, just Saturday AM for the youngest riders.
Thanks to Wendy, Therese and Don, new facility has been prepared for painting, and Boris is still working on fixing minor things...so moving and painting project will start next week end.
Please, let us know if anyone has will, time and energy to help about it...
it is related to painting and moving Spirit's assets from FPP to Spirit Farm
Thank you ahead for any help.

We are moving to the Spirit Farm!

As most of you already know, Spirit Program is moving away again...
We are thankful to Leslie and Dan for their support, and we will stay close to them, even it is a time to move on.
New facility is only 5 miles longer distance from my home at Arlington, and you can google your way to Spirit Farm:
40685 John Mosby Highway, Aldie
almost ready for us, and there are some adjusting and final preparation in process right now.

For our riders, this means that we will have to make a brake in continuity of lessons until we settle at new farm ...

After numerous contacts with parents, we recognized that it is better to stop PM lessons during the week, so we will try to do only Saturday lessons as scheduled at 7th and 14th for youngest riders.

We will need as much as possible volunteers for those Saturdays, and there are some possible work days at new facility, so please, contact me if you are willing to participate...
Thank you for your patience and I am looking forward to see you at new facility soon.

Stay in touch!

Thank you Leslie & Dan - Welcome Sonny!

Whatever pain comes all is easier with good friends...
Thank you Leslie and Dan for all you did to help Spirit keep on going after Annie was gone....

So, Sonny came from Louise's farm...

He seems to fit into Spirit as he always was part of our team...

Sunday, August 23, 2009

Anastasia is gone...

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take
But by the moments that take our breath away”

Annie had a great life, and enriched lives of many kids and their parents in last few months.

It was her time to go last night, and I was not able to stop her...

To all parents whose kids used to ride Annie...please explain them that Annie had to go back to her mom and dad, and soon she will send us her sister for replacement...

This is a part of life, and I am proud that we never dismissed that little mare for her neurological problems...and she gave us back with great moments of love and acceptance for her riders.

Saturday, August 22, 2009

Sad news...

Annie's time was over tonight ...she had to leave...same way as Spirit The Mare...
Good bye, little Annie, and thank you for all great moments you gave to us...

Friday, August 21, 2009

Unfortunately after many talks with Dada and Jessica from Raithel Farm, looks like due to weather we're going to have to postpone "A Day with Spirit."

Tentatively we are looking at Labor Day weekend as the rain date, but we will have more information on that a little later.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

Weather Possibilities

The weather forecast for tomorrow is dismal, however the SPIRIT team will be at Raithel Farm despite the weather, providing food and having fun in the large barn to wait out the possible rain. As of now there is no rain date set, so everyone is still welcome to come out to the farm for food and games! In the event that it is sunny, then activities will go on as planned!

Please keep checking the blog for the most up-to-date information or you can call Dada (703-600-9667) or Sarah (434-770-1067) for the latest updates.

Please, do not loose your patience and we will arrange something soon to be able to run our program normally.

Two Teens Receive Character Award

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

The McLean Citizens Association is awarding two teens a Teen Character Award in the 13th annual award ceremony at McLean Day on Saturday, May 16. The award ceremony will take place at 2:45 p.m., at Lewinsville Park on Chain Bridge Road in McLean. Supervisor John Foust (D-Dranesville); School Board member Janie Strauss (Dranesville) and Rob Jackson, McLean Citizens Association president, will present the awards.

This year's awardees are Sarah Mendelsohn, a junior at Langley High School, and Chloe Yazdani, a senior at McLean High School.

Mendelsohn is being recognized for volunteering at Spirit Open Equestrian, a therapeutic riding center. Most Saturdays for the past two years, she has worked with young children, teenagers and adults with special needs, helping them to ride a horse. She helps get the horses ready prior to therapy, assists with lessons, helps make the rides feel at ease and then helps put the horses away for the day. She always arrives early and is typically one of the last to leave. When other volunteers do not show up, she willingly steps in. "Many of the parents of the special needs children have expressed their gratitude and commented on Sarah’s maturity and special care that she gives to their children," wrote Mendelsohn’s mother. "She loves that she can help people learn to love the horses and help them move."

Wednesday instead Thursday

Dear all, please, note that we had to switch lessons from Thursdays to Wednesday...it is hard to find a place when all is full of dogs there, so Sydney, Patrick, Nate and Wendy - lessons at Wednesday, please confirm it...
Thank you !

Thursday ?

Again, call me after 4 to make final decision about lessons.
I am so sorry because of this weather, construction, and shows at FPP conditions which keep our lessons blocked...

It is temporary, I know...
Looking forward to seeing all our riders in saddle soon....

Rain again?

Please call after 4.15 PM to check weather situation about riding today, if you do not see anything new here ;)

Friday, May 8, 2009

Dear friends, riders, families, helpers...

As you can see, it is hard to keep Saturday schedule as we planed, due to construction work and horse shows at FPP.

We can do lessons at Saturdays without anything going on there, but it seems to be smart to just keep on going and do lessons at week days later PM, to avoid heat...anyway....

It seems to be good if lessons will start at 6 and at 7 PM ( Spirit Team, instructors, assistants, should come at 5.30 to help set up horses) all weekdays.

Tuesday and Thursday will be possible to do lessons even at 5,6 and 7 PM (at 5 will start Karen or Whitney, and Dada will come for lessons at 6 and 7 )

Please, see draft schedule above and contact me on blog, or at e-mail about your preferred times, or with any comments regarding this change.

Red X - possible open spot
? - Volunteers needed

Thank you for your patience, and looking forward to seeing you again...

Waiting for Sun and for the end of construction work at FPP...

Dear friends,
thank you for your patience, and I am looking forward to see all Monday riders next week, assuming that this rain will stop before then...

Still raining...

No one confirmed to come today...and it is still danger of rain...

Let's hope that next week will be dry and sunny...

Jessica and Annie

Jessica said "I am up! I am not afraid!"

Happy Birthday , Patrick!

Today was Patrick's BD...but rain stopped celebration with horses...
Anyway, we wish you a Happy Birthday, Patrick!

Good news!
It seems that we will be able to use indoor if weather does not permit riding outside, but only on week days...There is still a problem about grooming and tacking at open field, so , please , be sure that you contacted me by blog, phone or e-mail about lesson time if it is raining ....

This above does not apply on Thursday PM hours, as FPP has been reserved by dog training organizations...

Suggestion, let's Thursday lessons move to Wednesday...? Please let me know your thoughts...

And treat for the end of this post...Jessica on Annie...

Monday forecast

Please call if you are not sure...but it seems that we will stay at home this Monday...

Third Saturday cancellation ...

Third Saturday cancellation...
Due to construction work, and busy schedule, it seems that we can conduct lessons only at one Saturday in May - 23rd
We should start thinking about better solutions...
For now, please, let me know if any of Saturday riders might come Wednesday PM?
Make a comment or send me an e-mail, please.
Thank you for your patience...

No lessons for two Saturdays!

I am sorry that we will have to cancel lessons and all activities for next two Saturdays (2nd and 9th of May) due of a Big Horse Shows at FPP. All rings and facility will be in use for large number of horses, all parking lots will be full.

All we can do is to offer make up lessons for Thursdays, at 5.30 and 6.30 PM.
Please, let me know if you want to come.

Thank you for understanding and patience...

Congratulation Jessica! Thumb up for Patrick!

I do not have photos, but I hope that mom and dad will share with us pics they made today...Jessica, tiny angel, today rode on Annie with big smile repeating " I am up! I am not afraid!" - and it was even more inspiring when we heard from her mom that she never created sentences like those on her own...

Congratulation, Jessica!

Patrick did great lesson on his Colby Dilan, sitting straight and tall...as well as taking care about all horses... :D

Sharon, achieved great riding skills with Karen coaching her, so she will show at next Spirit public event.....

Saturday, April 25, 2009

Thank you all for great Saturday!

Volunteer Team was great, Julia, Sarah, Mary Kate, Jeff...Whitney was with Spirit again this morning...so Cella, Robbie, Patrick and Ryan did great lessons with lot of fun...

Only Ginny and her father did not find us... :( Saturday show was going on and Spirit program was in lower ring, left from parking lots...we missed her ...

So, please, if you are lost and can not find us, call me at 703-600-9667
Thank you!

Also, it seems that soon will be one or two BIG shows at FPP and we will have to cancel our lessons because of lack of space....will let you know more when I find out details...

Whatt a day!

What a great day was today at FPP in Spirit!
Special THANK YOU for Julia who came first and helped to set up all three horses for lessons, and Jeff and Maura who came just on time to make it happen again :)

Ginny did her first full lesson riding independent on Annie, steering, making her walk and stop.....Cella enjoyed at "magic of Spirit" (her dad's words)laughing and chatting all the time...Robbie, again, showed her skills in steering on Annie, and long periods of "two point position"...Ryan and Patrick, with Robbie, did long ride around the Park, exploring trials, woods, and practicing trot at open space ....

Infinity, Colby Dylan and Anastasia were, again , great partners, giving safe, fun, and interesting experience to all our riders...

Too bad that do not have any photos to share...

Thank you all, for special day today :D
