Show with Spirit

Dear Spirit Mentors, and EAL students

Frying Pan Farm Park is having a Fun Show on Saturday, July 19 as part of their Rider Appreciation Weekend.
We'd love for you to show a Spirit horse! It will be free for mentors to use a Spirit horse for the day. If you don't have your own annual riding pass, you will also need to pay Frying Pan Park $5 per class or $50 for the day. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate your skills in a stress-free environment and to spend some quality time with your horse, other riders and the volunteer mentors!

Please contact Cathy or Dada before Tuesday, July 1 if you would like to participate in those events

Time for Summer Camps and young campers

Hello to all friends, volunteers, riders!
It is that time again - morning camps 9-11 AM week days and great opportunity for Spirit Team to share all magic horse can do in a life with little ones.
This year our campers will be younger but with same interest, love and passion for horses.
Thank you all who signed up to come and volunteer for camps and create special moments of discovering friendship between a kid and a horse
We still can use more helping hands. If you are registered volunteer, just contact Emma and put your name at schedule, or just come

Way to go!

In Judaism there is a concept of tzedakah (or charity). At the preschool where Mindy, our OPresident of the BOD teaches, the children bring in their nickels and dimes every week and add the to the tzedakah jar. At the end of the year her class decided that part of the money should go to help animals and part of the money should go to help children. She knew just the right organization to receive this donation of love.
She says: "It is my great honor to present SPIRIT Open Equestrian Program with $50 from the children matched with $50 from my family"

Thank you Mindy!

EAP works

Ioana Boie, one of our equine assisted psychotherapists is also a full time faculty member at Marymount University.
Over the summer, she is teachingCE 598 Equine assisted psychotherapy, a graduate elective course part of the Marymount University Counselor Education and Supervision Ed.D program.
The students will meet for equine assisted psychotherapy demonstrations, and once they will observe the therapeutic riding sessions and the work done at Spirit with children with disabilities.
The two sessions will be facilitated at Spirit with the Spirit herd in June and July.
Thank you Ioana!

To volunteers from Emma:

Hope everyone had a Happy Father's Day! Endless thanks to all the Dads who tolerate (or even embrace?!) the smell of horse boots by the front door, eating dinner super-late because their child was at the barn until 8pm, cart our volunteers to and from lessons, and care for our 4-legged friends!

A few notes:

1. This is make-up week! This generally means we will have fewer students, and more time to focus on volunteer training. However, we did have to cancel Thursday and Friday lessons last week, which means we can expect the full fun of a normal lesson week on those days at least!

2. Next week is camp! Who doesn't want to relive the days of their own summer camp? This is your chance! You don't need to add your name to the schedule yourself, but please please PLEASE do let me know if/ when you will be helping out next week. This is critical so we can make sure we have enough volunteers to handle the camp. CAMP NEEDS YOU!

3. I did a little bit of schedule clean-up. If you have not recorded any volunteer hours in the red binder over the past month, I have taken your name off of the weekly schedule and sign-in. If this last month was just exceptionally busy, you switched days, or forgot to fill out hours- just email me with the days you come and I'll add you back in! If you can make it some weeks and not others, just be sure to email me before the Sunday night of that week, and I can make sure you are on the schedule/ sign-in.

Sunday inspiration

Sunday training for our Mentor Emma and Sky.
Sky came as green mare from Camelot a year ago.
Great on lead line, willing to follow and work in Equine Assisted Therapy, and Equine Assisted Learning programs, but never really knew ordinary job for most be ridden alone :)
See her now, relaxed, willing and full of trust. Such a joy for rider and horse to do it this way :)
Our possible next project - Public training for mentors and EAL students, and possible service for anyone with own horse - to help owners/riders to understand their horses and vice verse ;)

Share this, please, among friends who need some taste of Farm life or workout :)

If you need exercise - sign in for Farm-work volunteer Team. You can spend mornings or evenings outdoor, making Spirit Farm nicer, supporting SPIRIT Open Equestrian Program and do something for your body and soul at the same time.

Message for volunteers

Emma's message for this week:

Hello everyone!

A brief recap for everyone that missed out: last week was pretty exciting at Spirit! We welcomed a new mare to the herd, and with her noble manners she earned her new name "Lady".

The week was also packed with other exciting events: The 70th anniversary of D-day, the Belmont (followed by Mr. Coburn's not-so-classy-but-still-pretty-justified meltdown), DC's Pride Parade and, of course, National Doughnut Day last Friday! While I can't promise the same excitement this week, National Peanut Butter Cookie Day is this Thursday!

Before everyone gets too excited, I do have one other announcement:

Summer camps begin June 24!! The complete camp schedule can be found on the blog and to the best of my current knowledge, we will need volunteers from around 9am-12:30pm the mornings we have camps, and also from around 5pm-8pm each evening for our "normal" lessons. If you consistently volunteer in the evening, I've kept you on the schedule for the evening lessons. However, if you would like to volunteer in the morning as well/ instead, just let me know via email or edit the google schedule!

And last but not least, a few reminders:
-Use the volunteer schedule spreadsheet to put your name (and the first letter of your last name!) on the schedule or cancel a day.
-Record your hours in the red binder, located in the Office Shed next to Spirit's stall.
-Always check for cancellations via the blog, and sign up at to be notified automatically.
-If you are no longer volunteering, and do not want to receive updates, please email me to be taken off the listserve.
-Sign and electronically submit the Equine Liability Release Waiver if you haven't already done so.
-Questions/ comments? Email me!

Have a great week (and apologies to anyone with nut-allergies, I'll find another National Cookie Day for you in the future, promise)!

PS -If you are volunteer at Spirit and did not get this message in your e-mail, let me know, please

Nice still no name mare

She came home safely. No pictures yet, sorry. She seems to be gentle, noble, shy. laid back, good ground manners...promising valuable addition to Spirit herd. Reminds me on Infinity, younger and skinny version... Three queens, Cece, Glory and Frederica greeted her and whole herd was curious for few minutes, but after that they went back to their hay feeders, and she was friendly and brave in first over the fence contacts...Still no name, so that is the important task for Monday crew to decide...
